Early July Foundation Garden and Orange & Yellow Garden 2013

Foundation Garden

Huechera 'Frosted Violet'. This plant likely gets too much sun which is why it's not as purple as it could be. July 13

Salvia x sylvestris 'Rose Queen' (ornamental sage) and Nepeta x faassenii (catmint). Behind them are peony and Siberian iris leaves. July 13

Yellow and Orange Garden

Kniphofia 'Alcazar'. Spent flowers needed to be cut back. July 13

The garden, looking from on from the driveway. A torrential downpour flattened the 'Moonbeam' coreopsis but Zagreb didn't miss a beat. July 13

, Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed), Leucanthemum x superbum 'Gold Rush'. The Agastache I had all died to a very wet winter so these are new plants. The shasta daisies, while very pretty, brown out way too quickly so they'll get replaced. July 13

close-up of Agastache mexicana 'Acapulco Orange' (hyssop). The leaves smeel delicious - very fruity. July 13

Helenium 'Mardi Gras' (sneezeweed), Echinacea 'Hot Summer' (cone flower), Alcea rugosa (Russian hollyhock). Supposedly rugosas are less prone to rust but I didn't notice any difference. Half of the Echinacea flowers reverted back to pink. The plant will get moved since it now clashes terribly.  July 13

Hypericum kalmianum 'Sunny Boulevard' (Kalm's St. John's Wort). This is a small shrub planted last year. The culivar is also known as 'Deppe'. July 13

Close up of Alcea rugosa and Helenium 'Mardi Gras'. These hollyhock on the left side of the Helenium had less rust and less Japanese beetle damage even though they were grown in more shade. July 13.

Hollyhock close up. The plants are high maintenance to say the least, but I do love them. July 13

Helenium 'Mardi Gras' close-up. A stellar plant, much loved by bees. July 13

Digitalis ambigua foliage (foxglove), Hosta 'Rainforest Surprise' , Tagetes tenuifolia 'Tangerine Gem' (Signet marigold), Huechera 'Caramel' (coral bells). The marigolds self seeded there. If I had realized, I would have moved them as its way too shady for them. As a result, they didn't start blooming until the end of July. July 13

close up of Huechera 'Caramel'. This plant was newly purchased this year. Behind it is Thalictrum flavum ssp. glaucum (yellow meadow rue). July 13

Huechera 'Ginger Ale'. Still a small plant, but slowly increasing. July 13

shady end of the garden. July 13

Hosta 'Night Before Christmas'. newly planted this year. July 13

Brunnera macrophylla  (Siberian bugloss). Across from this bed is a bed in front of my house which is currently not planted. This seeded prolifically into it! July 13

a pretty combination. Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' (Solomon's seal), Brunnera macrophylla  (Siberian bugloss), Athyrium niponicum 'pictum' (Japanese painted fern). July 13

Huechera 'Obsidian' (coral bells). July 13
