Early June 2011 - June 1 - 15

Cottage Garden

Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Bath's Pink' As you can see, most of the flowering was over by this point. Because of the early warm spell in March, everything has been very early this year. June 5

This is the back of the cottage garden, driveway side. Penstemon "Red Riding Hood", next to it is Campanula "Kent Bell" (not in bloom) and behind then are three Salvias (sages) - Salvia nemorosa "Plumosa", Salvia "Eveline" and a Salvia that I believe is an accidental cross between "Eveline" and nemorosa "May Night" which is to the right of these plants. June 5

In addiion to the plants listed in the preceding photo, there is Penstemon 'Dark Towers' in the upper left, Nicotiana 'Starmaker Bright Red' in the right foreground and Asclepias tuberosa 'Hello Yellow' (butterfly weed) in the upper right getting ready to bloom. June 7

Heuchera 'Midnight Rose', Heuchera 'Fire Chief', Dianthus deltoides 'Arctic Fire' (maiden pinks). It took me a long tome to find a grouping of plants that I liked for this area. The greenery behind these plants belong to Echinacea (coneflower). June 7

Another photo of the same area, also showing Heuchera 'Raspberry Ice' in front of the Dianthus and an Astilbe. June 7

Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal' (false spirea) coming into bloom. One of my favorite plants, it needs to be kept moist. June 7. Next to it is Aquilegia vulgaris 'Clementine Red' (columbine), one final flower is visible. June 7

Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal' (false spirea) in bloom. The picture does not do it justice. June 14

Sedum spurium 'Dragons Blood' planted in between stepping stones last year. June 14

Panicum virgatum 'Cheyenne Sky' (red switch grass). As the summer progresses, this grass will turn wine red. June 14

Ipomoea sloteri (cardinal climber). Related to morning glories, this is a very fast grower.  At the bottom is Clematis 'Rebecca'. June 14.

Cimicifuga ramosa 'James Compton' (bugbane). I think the foliage is very beautiful. June 7

Gold and Orange Garden

This garden was newly planted last year and it's really coming along

Kniphofia 'Alcazar' (torch lily) coming into bloom. June 14

Sedum repestre 'Angelina' (Jenny's stonecrop), Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle), Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam' (tickseed). This combination of plants is even nicer than I thought it would be. June 14

Chrysanthemum 'Golden Regards' just starting to bloom. I planted three small starts last summer, they really took off. June 14

Baptisia 'Solar Flare' (false indigo), Papaver rupifragum 'Double Tangerine Gem' (Spanish poppy), Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Golden Mop' (Japanese false cypress). This is the back of the bed, the third closest to the house. June 7

The sunny portion of the bed, looking from the side. The area where the rain gauge is standing will be planted next year. June 14

Not blooming yet, but the variety of leaf textures keeps it interesting. Achillea 'Terra Cotta' (yarrow), Alcea rugosa (hairy hollyhock), Helenium 'Mardi Gras' (sneezeweed). June 7

Thalictrum flavum subsp. glaucum (yellow meadow rue). A delicate looking plant for the back of the border. This and the picture aboue are the center section of this garden. June 7.

(avens). If I had deadheaded sooner, I would have gotten even more blooms. June 14

Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed). This is a native species. June 14

Geum 'Totally Tangerine', Asclepias tuberosa, Leucanthemum x superbum 'Goldrausch' and Echinacea 'Tiki Torch' (both in bud). June14

Alchemilla mollis, Aquilegia chrysantha 'Denver Gold' (columbine) and Anthemis sancti-johannis (St. John's Chamomile). June 7

Echinacea 'Summer Sun'. This is a very pretty coneflower, but it's just too pink for this bed and will have to be moved. June 14

Thalictrum flavum ssp. glaucum (yellow meadow rue). The leaves are very similar to the leaves of columbine. June 14

Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle). Used as an edger throughout this garden. June 7

Brunnera macrophylla, Athyrium niponicum var. pictum (Japanese painted fern), Polygonatum odoratum var. thunbergii 'Variegatum' (varigated Solomon's seal), Polemonium reptans 'Touch of Class' (Jacob's ladder). As these plants mature and fill in, this area will look even better. June 7

Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' (Chinese globe flower). This plant is still pretty sparse and didn't flower very strongly. I'm hoping it bulks up this season. June 7

Ligularia dentata 'Britt Marie Crawford'. Hopefully, this plant will really take off this year. June 7
